Congratulations to the two recipients of our Foundation's 2018 Harry Howell Scholarship Award. This years recipients are Salsabil Sarhan and Faisal Mohamed, both former Sir John A MacDonald students.
The Foundation has supported a graduating student (both male and female) that is registered in a post-secondary institution with a $1,000 scholarship each year. The students who are chosen have participated in extra-curricular activities, have taken leadership roles in their schools and have given back to their community. This is another connection the Foundation makes in supporting the 23 Hamilton schools that participate in the Breakfast Program.
Salsabil Sarhan was Sir John A MacDonald's student council president as well as it's athletic council president. Along with also being the captain of the senior girls basketball team, she was a 'link crew' member, which helped to mentor the grade 9 students, a grad committee member, health action team member and the leader of the morning announcement crew. An extremely deserving recipient of the scholarship, Salsabil embodies everything the Harry Howell scholarship is about. She will be attending McMaster University in the fall for Social Sciences.
Faisal Mohamed was named the most valuable player for basketball at Sir John A MacDonald, as well as for the entire HWDSB. Faisal loves to give back to the community and for the past 4 years, he has been volunteering at a basketball camp known as Hoops. On top of that, he started his own program at a local park where he helps children who cannot attend camps work on their basketball skills. Faisal said the main reason he does this is to give back to the community and to the places that he could go to for help when he needed it the most. In the fall, he will be attending Mohawk College for Police Foundations.
A big thank you goes out to Cheryl Townson, the daughter of Harry Howell for taking the time to come and meet with Faisal and Salsabil as they accepted their awards this past Monday.
